Staged Implant Reconstruction is one of the most common postmastectomy reconstruction methods. It’s an approach with two obvious benefits: no donor sites and the ability to use larger implants. While this approach is primarily composed of two stages, it requires multiple visits to your surgeon during the process. During the first stage a tissue expander is inserted. Over several months, you’ll return to your surgeon periodically, where saline will be injected, increasing the size of the tissue expander. Once enough space has been created, the second stage begins and we’ll replace the tissue expander with your breast implant. These periodic visits to you surgeon aren’t a drawback though, as they provide the opportunity to evaluate how you’re healing.
